To specify: If you finish the tutorial messages, you are free to do whatever you'd like, since there is no challenge presented other than overpopulation due to building too many huts too fast. I do have patience and planning ahead is a great part of the game, but the reward in this game for being patient and being able to build the next building just falls flat because the new buildings feel unnecessary since the colony is able to sufficiently stand on its own before you are unlocking most of your research. Those keep you on your toes and have you adapt to those situations. In other colony builder games you have mechanics like for example rotting food, weather events, outside interference and internal strive between characters to name a few. I do enjoy this kind of game a lot but this one stands out as being especially devoid of things happening. I played a few colony builders and to my shame or glory I got a few thousand hours in most. I simply think that in this particular colony builder the strife is not well implemented (yet?). Regarding colony builders, I would like to point out that I no point I said that I hate those things described. It was a pure sandbox, but it only really took off after the creeper was implemented and was threatening what you built in a meaningful way. Other genre but similar story: Minecraft. In regards to sandboxing: I think it is a fine concept, but every sandbox will become boring at some point. I am always glad to have a fruitful discussion. Thank you two for the time you invested answering.
